How Many Pokémon TCG Cards Have Been Printed?
Over 85 billion Pokémon TCG cards have been printed worldwide, with yearly print runs from 2014 through COVID, Pokémon 151, and TCG Pocket.
Pokémon cards have been in print since 1996. In the last decade, annual output climbed from roughly 1.5 to 2 billion cards a year to about 10 billion, and the hobby's biggest sales and set launches started showing up in mainstream news.
The Pokémon Company now reports over 85 billion cards produced worldwide as of March 2026.

2014–2016
Before the boom
The XY era was in full swing, built around Mega Evolution and full-art chase cards in sets like Roaring Skies. Evolutions, the last XY set, came out in November 2016 and brought back original Kanto Pokémon with new art. Factories were printing on the order of 1.5 to 2 billion cards a year, well below post-2020 levels. Cumulative worldwide production sat around 21.5 billion across 10 languages and 74 countries.
2017–2018
Sun & Moon launches
Sun & Moon arrived in 2017 with Pokémon-GX and full-art chase cards as a main draw. By March 2017, cumulative production had passed 23.6 billion, a fraction of where totals sit today.
2018–2019
Team Up arrives
About 1.5 billion cards were printed in the fiscal year ending March 2019, the lowest March-to-March window in this dataset. Team Up launched in February 2019 and introduced TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX, including Pikachu & Zekrom-GX.
2019–2020
Detective Pikachu: Cards and Movie
The live-action Detective Pikachu movie arrived in May 2019 alongside an 18-card TCG set. About 3.2 billion cards were printed in the fiscal year ending March 2020, roughly double the year before and the start of the climb.
2020–2021
COVID, extra cash, fewer outlets
COVID shut down restaurants, travel, and events. For those with disposable income who could work remotely, there was suddenly less to spend money on. About 3.7 billion cards were printed in the fiscal year ending March 2021. Champion's Path dropped in September 2020, and the rainbow Charizard VMAX became one of the most chased cards of the era.
Late 2020
Pack openings go mainstream
YouTubers and Twitch streamers started ripping vintage and modern packs live, and audiences showed up. Twitch's Pokémon TCG category grew more than 3,000% in monthly viewership hours from March 2020 to January 2021. High-profile YouTube box breaks pulled in hundreds of thousands of concurrent viewers.
2021
Graders fall behind
In March 2021, a PSA 10 shadowless 1st Edition Base Set Charizard sold for $311,800 in a PWCC auction on eBay. Forbes, Fortune, and Polygon covered the sale. PSA suspended most submission tiers in April 2021 after receiving more cards in three days than the previous three months. BGS turnaround times stretched past a year at the economy tier.
2021–2022
Output nearly triples
About 9.1 billion cards were printed in the fiscal year ending March 2022, close to triple the pre-2020 pace. Evolving Skies had the alt arts everyone wanted, though brutal pull rates earned it the nickname "Evolving Cries."
2022–2023
Scarlet & Violet begins
About 9.7 billion cards were printed in the fiscal year ending March 2023. Scarlet & Violet launched that spring with a new ex era and illustration-rare chase cards in the main sets.
2023–2024
151 sells out fast
The fiscal year ending March 2024 is still the highest on record: about 11.9 billion cards. Pokémon 151 launched in September 2023 with the original 151 Pokémon front and center. For many lapsed fans, it was the first time they had picked up cards in years, drawn back by nostalgia. High-demand products sold out quickly at many retailers on launch weekend.
Oct 2024
TCG Pocket launches
The mobile app launched globally on October 30, 2024 and passed 10 million downloads within days. It is not paper production, but it put pack openings on millions of phones and brought the TCG to a much wider audience.
2024–2025
Still billions a year
Output eased to about 10.2 billion in the fiscal year ending March 2025, down from the peak but still more than triple the pre-COVID pace. Lifetime production passed 75 billion. Special sets like Prismatic Evolutions in January 2025 still sold through at retail in hours.
2025–2026
Bots and markups
Since 1996, over 85 billion Pokémon cards have been printed worldwide across 16 languages. Annual output is still higher than entire decades of the 2000s, even though the single-year record belongs to 2023–24. Scalping at retail is as bad as it has ever been: bots buy through online drops within minutes of going live, and most hot product ends up marked up two to three times on resale sites.

There is still hope!
Millennium Print Group, Pokémon's U.S. printer, is building a 1.27 million-square-foot campus in Morrisville, North Carolina (Trinity Capital, News & Observer). That expansion is meant to raise print capacity, so more product should reach shelves over the next few years.
Not every set is getting wiped out either. Recent main sets like Perfect Order, Chaos Rising, and Pitch Black have seen demand cool off, with scalpers leaving a lot of product sitting on shelves.
How to find cards you like?
Retail is still a mess, but more than 85 billion cards are already out in the world. Browsing set lists only gets you so far when the catalog is this large.
